Lent: A season to slow down, reconnect, and rediscover each other and God

Walking Through Lent With Intentional Hearts

We’re now two weeks into Lent—far enough along that our initial burst of motivation may be fading, yet still early enough to refocus with purpose. This sacred season isn’t just about personal sacrifice; it’s also a beautiful opportunity to strengthen the heart of our domestic church: our marriage and our family life. When we choose intentionality, we allow God to transform not only our souls, but the rhythm of our homes.

The Gift of Togetherness: Our Family Unity Hour

One of the most unexpected blessings of our Lent has been instituting a Family Unity Hour—a simple, unplugged hour where we put aside the schedules, silence the devices, and truly see one another again.

There’s no agenda. No checklist. Just presence.

Some nights we play board games. Other nights we talk about school, dreams, or whatever silly thing someone brings up. And every so often, the Holy Spirit whispers: Dance party. And so we dance. It’s ordinary and magical all at once.

We end our hour together with a Gratitude Rosary, helping all of us recount our daily blessings.

What matters most is that we’re together—laughing, listening, and remembering that family time doesn’t need to be elaborate to be meaningful.

Ideas to Enrich the Journey (Even Mid‑Lent!)

If you’re looking for ways to deepen connection as this season continues, here are some simple yet grace‑filled practices:

  • 1. Pray Together as Spouses: Even a short nighttime prayer can reshape the spiritual tone of your marriage. Hold hands, thank God for the day, lift up intentions, and ask for renewed love. It’s vulnerable, intimate, and unifying.
  • 2. Create a Family Gratitude Jar: Each evening, invite everyone to write a small gratitude note. Read them aloud on Easter Sunday for a joyful reminder of God’s goodness.
  • 3. Serve Together: Choose a small Lenten act of service as a family—writing cards to someone in need, baking for a neighbor, or preparing a donation box.
  • 4. Scripture Sharing: Pick one verse a week. Let each family member reflect on it and share their thoughts during dinner or your unity hour.

Let Lent Transform the Love Within Your Home

Lent invites us to turn our hearts back to God—but also back to each other. Through intentional time, prayer, and shared acts of love, this season can become a springtime of grace within our marriages and families.

When we slow down, we make space for God.
When we lean in, we make space for one another.

And that is the true beauty of Lent lived well, together.
